New Jersey Boutique Refuses to Sell Wedding Dress to Lesbian Woman

With New York recently passing legislation to make gay marriage legal, it’s not surprising that same-sex couples in the area are choosing to take the plunge. But what should be a happy and momentous occasion turned a bit sour when one New Jersey bridal salon refused to sell a dress to a lesbian woman, citing that they would not be partaking in “illegal actions.”

Alix Genter and her partner, are planning to get a civil union in New Jersey, where they live, and marry in New York. Last weekend, Alix and six of her family members went to a bridal shop called Here Comes the Bride to try on dresses. She found a dress she liked, but wanted it in a different fabric, so left a message with the store manager. The manager noticed on Alix’s customer information form that the word “groom” had been crossed out, in favor of “partner,” and decided to give Genter a piece of her mind.

“Donna,” the store manager, said that the civil union would be illegal (not true!) and that the store does “not participate in any illegal actions.”

A columnist from Philly.com, Ronnie Polaneczky, interviewed Donna for a column, wherein Donna accused Alix of being “aggressive,” and writing the word ‘partner’ just to “show that she’s different. They get that way.” Donna then allegedly went on a rant about gay people she’s known who have molested children and/or commited violence, then suggested the columnist interview Alix’s father, as she “sensed” his disappointment in Alix’s marrying a woman.

Yuck, yuck, yuck. There is just nothing nice about this story whatsoever.
