Recent Survey Says Women Won't Marry An Unemployed Man

This seemingly never ending recession has caused some couples to delay having and kids and others to stick it out instead of divorcing. Now it seems it has also impacted who women will and will not marry.

A recent study conducted by yourtango.com and Forbes Woman, polled 625 of their readers and a whopping 75 percent would not marry a man who was unemployed.

At the same time women are holding themselves to the same standard.  The sites reported that 65% of the women surveyed said if they were unemployed they would not get married themselves.

This may not be a representation of all women’s attitudes towards marriage, but it is in line with other trends.  Most people have been delaying major life events because of the recession and dismal recovery.

Even Census reports have hinted that more people are living together because of high unemployment rates.  Additionally, the Center for Disease Control has seen a decline in the marriage rate from 2004-2009.

That rate may continue to decline if employment is a key criterion before marriage. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent in May, and the median length of unemployment is 22 weeks.
