Men's Health: Lexington, KY America’s Least Active City

The folks at Men’s Health are at it again. While in the past they’ve covered everything from obesity, alcoholism, and sex, this month the popular men's magazine ranks America’s most sedentary cities.

To identify the nation’s laziest locales, Men’s Health looked at “where and how often people exercise (Experian Marketing Services); the percentage of households that watch more than 15 hours of cable a week and buy more than 11 video games a year (Mediamark Research); and the rate of deaths from deep-vein thrombosis, a condition linked to a lot of sitting (CDC).” The results?

States in the South didn’t fare so well, nor did those in the Midwest. Of the top 10 least active cities, five are nestled in the South and four come from Oklahoma and Texas. Six of the most active metropolises, on the other hand, came from the West Coast (or near it).

So which city is the laziest of them all? That honor belongs to Lexington, Kentucky, followed closely by Indianapolis, IN; Jackson, MS; Charleston, WV; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Little Rock, AR; Nashville, TN; Laredo, TX; and Birmingham, AL.

Seattle, WA is the least sedentary American city, followed by San Francisco, CA; Oakland, CA; Washington DC; Salt Lake City, UT; Reno, NV; Portland, ME; Atlanta, GA; Denver, CO; and Minneapolis, MN.
