Men’s Health Ranks the Most (and Least) Educated Cities in the U.S.

This month, the folks at Men’s Health tackle the topic of education by ranking the nation’s most and least educated cities. What grade do you think your hometown received?

To identify the nation’s most and least educated cities, Men’s Health looked at the Department of Education's high-school graduation rates, the U.S. Census figures on school and university enrollment, the education levels of people over 25, and the number of households with student loans and/or members enrolled in adult education courses. Here’s what they found.

Despite regional stereotypes, no area in the U.S. sticks out as being particularly educated or particularly ignorant. Take that East Coast!

Madison, WI, a city “where the average household has more degrees than a thermometer,” topped the list, earning a grade of A+. Plano, TX also earned top marks, while Raleigh, NC; Burlington, VT; and Seattle, WA rounded out the top five with three As and an A-.

As for the nation’s least educated city, the dunce hat goes to Miami. The Florida city ranked 100 on the Men’s Health list, with Cleveland, OH; Las Vegas, NV; Stockton, CA; and Detroit, MI rounding out the bottom five. Each city received an F, as did every city from #86 on down.
