How do you like your eggs? Scrambled? Over easy? Smashed over your head? In Swanton, England, egg throwing is considered a serious sport, even if you end up with egg on your face. An old legend led to local tradition which turned into a worldwide phenomenon.
In the 14th century, a newly appointed abbot was looking to increase church attendance. Since he was the only person in town to own chickens, he began giving out eggs after each sermon. When the river flooded and the church was separated from the village, monks started throwing eggs to the locals. As the gap grew wider, eggs would be launched with small trebuchets.
Today, the Egg Trebuchet Challenge is one of five championship events, along with Egg Throwing, the Egg Static Relay, Egg Target Throwing, and Russian Egg Roulette.
Performance enhancing drugs are strictly banned, according to The World Egg Throwing Federation, but imbibing the Swanton micro brew "Happy Jack" is not only permitted, but recommended.
